University of Leeds

This project involved the design and construction of a specialist laboratory for the faculty of biological sciences in the University of Leeds, Yorkshire. The laboratory specialises in carrying out experiments in the field of petrophysics, a sub-topic of geology concerning rocks. A new space was required for students and staff of the subject to facilitate collaborative working, while also accommodating the necessary equipment.

The detailed design process included the coordination of all specialist equipment and services including ground floor designs which allowed for existing services to be retained in the building.

The double storey building also had to meet critical structural vibration criteria due to the tolerances of some of the laboratory equipment.  Externally the building was finished with vertical wave panels and a duopitch roof.

Following the completion of the facility, research which has impacted the field of petrophysics has been carried out, including development of theoretical models and recording of the largest and highest ever quality measurement datasets.
