University of Edinburgh

As a part of its strategy for Easter Bush Campus, the University of Edinburgh required a new Early Years childcare facility. The provision of this facility would allow the University to attract and retain the highest quality researchers while supporting their childcare needs.

The orientation of the building was vital to the development, not only for the smooth operation of the facility but also to maximise the available view of the site. The building has south facing play rooms, so the children can benefit from wide ranging views over the rolling countryside and access directly to spacious external play space providing a truly rural feel to the entire facility.

The building design and finishes are in keeping not only with the project brief but the surrounding areas. Externally, a hit and miss natural timber cladding has been utilised along with full height curtain walling to the south elevations ensuring panoramic views are achieved from all playrooms. Solar shading to these areas is provided by a bespoke canopy. The central dining area has enhanced natural daylight due to the innovative modular roof sections designed to allow upright glazing into these areas with reduced overheating.
